- Here are a couple ideas on my mind of late. Please read and let me know
- if any of these might go somewhere...
-
- 1. The Amiga arguably got its biggest publicity boost from the Video
- Toaster, but high definition television seems just around the corner now.
- When the system is firmly in place, won't this niche (and the importance
- of the Amiga's bus timing) just dry up as digital broadcasts take over?
- What steps could AT take for the Amiga to keep its edge here? What about
- some special built-in graphics modes, or a built-in chip for graphics
- encoding/decoding and a DSP for sound? I know little about how hdtv will
- affect specific changes in video equipment and computers, but with no
- shortage of every kind of pc card nowadays, it seems like another losing
- battle...
-
- 2. I was reading an article in Byte concering the CHRP standard, now
- called simply the "PowerPC Platform". It seems either the standard wasn't
- completely set in stone, or IBM, Apple, and Motorola made some changes.
- Anyway, one thing mentioned was support for _either_ IBM PS/2 or Apple
- Desktop Bus (ADB) mouse interfaces. This is trivial, I know, but as AT
- has said they would abide by the standard, it implies we'll all be using
- IBM mice on the Power Amigas. There is no mention of joysticks, so I
- wonder where they will go with these?
-
- 3. The article also mentioned the PowerPC chip's "Open Firmware" boot
- system which would allow the computer to theoretically run any OS written
- for it: OS/2, NT, System 7 (or whatever Apple's PPC OS is called), etc.
- To change OS's, the article says the machine must be re-booted, but is
- this really a requirement of the chip, or might there be some way (and
- a nice benefit) of running two OS's concurrently without the need for an
- Emplant, Shapeshifter, etc., by adding some deep tricks to the Amiga OS?
- Say, by calling "Open Firmware" from within AmigaDos, and using LAmiga-B
- to jump between operating systems??? Sorry if this is a dumb question,
- but it sounded cool enough! ;-)
-
- BTW, did you know the Amiga was mentioned briefly on PBS's "Computer
- Chroncles" last week? It was 2/3 of the way through the program when
- they were running through the week's news. They quoted the company
- designing the Amiga set-top box, that "the Amiga chip set is perfect for
- such an application because of its versatility and low cost" (or some-
- thing like that). It was only a sentence or two, but it made me happy!
